Preview printing with Ink Savvy

You can use preview printing with Ink Savvy to compare the output before and after the Ink Savvy tool processes a job.

To combine preview printing and Ink Savvy, you must define a workflow that includes multiple PreviewPrint steps with the correct configuration. The example below shows the steps that can be included in a workflow. When they process a job, the steps:

  1. Save a copy of the original job spool file.
  2. Print the first five pages of the job.
  3. Use the Ink Savvy tool to process the job.
  4. Print the first five pages of the job again.
  5. Move the job to the Waiting for Acceptance state.

At this point, you or your customer must choose which preview print is acceptable. The job stays in the Waiting for Acceptance state until that decision is made and the operator takes the appropriate action. Then, the operator can follow your established procedures for printing the job. Some possible options are:

  • Accept the preview print and continue processing in this workflow.
The current print file is the output from Ink Savvy, so the optimized output is sent to the next step in the workflow.
  • Accept the preview print and continue processing in a different workflow.
The job starts processing with the first step in a different workflow. The default is for the new workflow to process the current print file, which is the output from Ink Savvy. To return to the original print file, the other workflow must retrieve the copy of the original spool file.
  • Reject the preview print and reprocess the job from an earlier step.

Example

You can add these steps to a workflow in the order listed to print a sample of a PDF job, then process the job with Ink Savvy and print another sample for comparison.

Ink Savvy can only process PDF print jobs, so this example assumes that the print job is PDF. If your job is in a different data stream, you can add steps to convert the job to PDF at an appropriate point in the workflow.
  • EnableRepositioning
  • SnapshotJobFile
This step copies the spool file and saves it with a different file type.
    • Snapshot file type: print.pdf
    • Snapshot file descriptor: original

In the name of the snapshot file, print is replaced with original. The print file 100273.print.pdf would have a snapshot file called 100273.original.pdf.

  • PreviewPrint_Original
This step is based on the PreviewPrint step template. To print the first five pages of the job, then continue processing without operator acceptance of the preview print, set these values:
    • Page range for preview print: 1-5
    • Accept preview print automatically: Yes
  • RunInkSavvyOnJob
This step sends the job to Ink Savvy to be processed and waits for the optimized file to be returned to continue processing. Set the properties to identify the directories that Ink Savvy uses.
  • PreviewPrint_InkSavvyOutput
This step is based on the PreviewPrint step template. To print the first five pages of the job, then wait for an operator to accept or reject the preview print, set these values:
    • Page range for preview print: 1-5
    • Accept preview print automatically: No
