New in this release

These new functions and updates are included in Ricoh ProcessDirector Version 3, Release 7.
  • The next step in the journey to a new user interface
Version 3.5.0 introduced a modernized user interface to do the most common Administration tasks and in Version 3.6, the most common Operator tasks were added to the Main page of the user interface. In this version, an all-new workflow builder is available.

The new workflow builder is not just a surface update; it also adds usability enhancements requested by our user community. To give you more room to lay out your workflows, you can now use the entire browser page as your canvas. An inset map lets you navigate on the canvas to zoom in on a step or connector. You have more control over the placement of rules on connectors and more flexibility in where you connect one step with another. You can select multiple steps and move them around on the canvas. You can save incomplete workflows to finish later and you can edit workflows that are enabled.

Most Administrator functions, including importing and exporting objects, can now be accomplished using only the updated user interface.

The user interface used to retrieve information from the repositories defined by the Archive feature has also been updated, adding the ability to delete your saved searches.

The legacy user interface is still available. A link on the legacy user interface launches the updated user interface in another browser tab, so you can use them side by side.

  • Reports feature redesigned and included in the base product
The Reports feature has been transformed to give you access to your printer, job, and document data in an industry-standard, open format. A configuration file lets you select what job and printer properties to write for all work in the system to PostgreSQL database tables that you can name. A new step template, WritePropsToReportsDatabase, can be placed one or more times in selected workflows to capture job and document properties for work that you want more specific information about. For example, you can collect job information such as document count when a job is first received and then later in the workflow record how many documents were printed or emailed.

The Reports function on the user interface is gone, but your business analysts can make their own reports and data visualizations by accessing the PostgreSQL tables directly. The Reports database that was used through Version 3.6 has been removed and a utility is provided to migrate your data from that database into PostgreSQL.

You can install the PostgreSQL database packaged with the Reports feature on the primary server of Ricoh ProcessDirector for Windows or Linux. For AIX, a Linux secondary server is required along with consulting services from our Advanced Solutions Practice.

The Reports feature is now provided as a no-charge feature with the base product. New customers must install it and customers who purchased the feature in a previous release are upgraded to the new version with no need for a license for the feature.

  • Improved sheet accounting for PDF jobs
Ricoh ProcessDirector is now “Plex aware.” With this ability, PDF jobs that contain a mixture of simplex and duplex sheets have “plex” page exceptions added to their JDF job tickets. In the past, blank pages would be added to the PDF file. Pages would be printed on the correct sides of each sheet, but you would pay a click charge for each blank page.

With this function, for printers that can process the page exceptions in the JDF, the blank pages no longer count in the click charge for the job. This capability extends to the PDF jobs created using the Preprinted Forms Replacement feature, as well as to the PDF created by the Advanced Transform Feature when AFP or PostScript containing mixed duplex settings are transformed to PDF.

  • Step templates to exchange data using SFTP
Ricoh ProcessDirector can also now send and receive files using the secure file transfer protocol from within a workflow in the form of two workflow steps, PullFromSFTP and PushToSFTP. Authentication with SSL certificates or user ID and password are supported. This function enables the integration with programs that use SFTP as their file exchange protocol.
  • Support for IPv6 networks
The AFP Support feature was enhanced to allow transmission of files from z/OS mainframes to Ricoh ProcessDirector using IPv6 format addresses. Similarly, Ricoh ProcessDirector can send jobs to AFP printers that have IPv6 format addresses.

Other IPv6 connections may be supported using the hostname format to identify the computer that Ricoh ProcessDirector is connecting to.

Printing to Ricoh PDF printers is not supported when the printer has an IPv6 format address.

  • Update properties on multiple jobs at once
If you have several jobs that all need to have multiple properties set to the same value, you can select the jobs and use the new Update Multiple action to select the properties and their values. Click OK and the updates are made to all of the jobs. This function is only available on the updated user interface.
  • Batching input files in hot folders
You can group all the input files that have been submitted to a hot folder input device and submit them together immediately. The Batching method for each input device determines how many jobs are created from each input device. For example, if the input device has been configured to receive 10 PDF files and only 8 have arrived, the Batch all function will submit the 8 files without waiting for the other 2. This function is only available on the updated user interface.
  • Enhancements to Process again action
The Process again action is useful when a job stops in its workflow and needs to be restarted. Sometimes many jobs are stopped at the same step in the same workflow. Rather than restarting all of the jobs at the first step in the workflow, you can now select the restart step for all of the jobs in the same workflow. This function is only available on the updated user interface.
  • PDF 2.0 support
When Ricoh ProcessDirector processes PDF 2.0 input files in a workflow, steps that modify PDF files automatically convert the data to PDF 1.7 format. If no steps in the workflow modify the PDF, the input file passes through Ricoh ProcessDirector in PDF 2.0 format. PDF 2.0 files that are sent to a Ricoh PDF or Ricoh TotalFlow printer with banner pages turned on are also converted to a PDF 1.7 format.
  • Browser support
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • Google Chrome
    • Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Internet Explorer is no longer supported.
  • New filter program to convert PDF from one version to another
A program is provided that can convert PDF files at version 1.2 through 1.7 to any other version of PDF within that same range. This function is useful if your printer supports a different version of PDF than the submitted PDF file. This program is provided as a PDF filter but is not called using the EnhancePDF step. It can be called using the RunExternalProgram step template.
  • New free Common Properties feature
Many of our customers who have engaged our Advanced Solutions Practice have requested a set of 16 job and 16 document properties that are useful to their businesses. These properties are packaged into a no-charge feature that you can install to make use of these properties for finding jobs in the system, grouping documents in a job and many other functions. Examples include Due date, Delivery method, and Folding type.
  • Enhanced math functions
In Version 3.6, a new symbol was added to let you set the values of job properties by adding, subtracting, or multiplying two values, which can be job properties or numbers. The Math symbol can be entered in fields on step templates in the Workflow Builder, including the AssignJobValues step template, and in fields in job property notebooks. In Version 3.7, two new operations were added – modulo and random.
  • Simplified updates to components
Ricoh ProcessDirector includes several components which often release new versions between releases of Ricoh ProcessDirector. When updates to Tomcat, Java, or IBM DB/2 are available, you can contact Ricoh Software Support for assistance updating just those components. This capability makes it easier for you to respond if your IT department discovers a problem in one of those components.
  • Enhancements to the Advanced Transform feature
In Version 3.6, the TransformToPDFWithMediaInfo step template was added to preserve page exceptions for media specifications when transforming AFP or PostScript to PDF. In Version3.7, the step template was enhanced to also preserve any sides (simplex/duplex) page exceptions during the transformation process. When you have the OutputPDF transform and one or both of the InputAFP and InputPS transforms, the step creates JDF containing both sides and media page exceptions.
  • Enhancement to the Avanti Slingshot Connect feature
Two new capabilities were added for sharing data between Avanti Slingshot Connect and Ricoh ProcessDirector:
    • Specify whether print counts are reported to Avanti Slingshot Connect in pages or sheets.
    • Job and job part identifiers set in JDF tickets are preserved in Ricoh ProcessDirector job properties for easier tracking.
