Using highlight color with the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100

The following is an introduction to using highlight color with the IBM(R) Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100.

To enable highlight color on the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100, do the following:

  1. Select Printer Definition -> Features.
  2. Select 8B4273.
  3. Select Enable.
  4. Select Close. A restart occurs automatically. Do not attempt any other task until the restart completes.

Innovations in high-speed printing technology have made it possible to produce customer documents with highlight color, including color variable data fields, at only a little greater cost per page than black printing. Highlighting key information improves the readability of documents, and the readers' comprehension of the information.

The Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU) in the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 work with your AFP(TM) applications and your Print Services Facility(TM) (PSF) printing subsystem to print one highlight color on a page in addition to black printing. Printer 1 of the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 prints the black portion of the page, and Printer 2 prints color. You can print at rated speed of the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 printer, allowing you to take advantage of highlight color without sacrificing the high throughput of your roll-feed production printers.

If you are considering using highlight color for the first time, you may want to read some of the many reports and design guidelines on color printing available from consultant services and color printing experts. Using color effectively in business documents is not rocket science, but there are some well-established "Do's and Don'ts" that will help you make your documents the best they can be. Once you know how you want your document to look, this documentation will help you understand how highlight color operates, and how to develop your Advanced Function Presentation(TM) (AFP) application to use its highlight color capabilities. Many existing AFP applications can take advantage of highlight color without any program changes at all, by simply changing an overlay or Page Definition to specify areas to be printed in color. Applications that generate fully formatted AFP datastream (AFPDS, or MO:DCA (Mixed Object Document Content Architecture)) may require some redesign. If you need assistance with your application design and/or implementation, contact your IBM Printing Systems Division marketing representative to discuss a services contract with IBM PSD Application Solutions.

Products such as the Page Printer Formatting Aid (PPFA), Overlay Generation Language (OGL) and the AFP Toolbox support development of highlight color applications and AFP resources. Color can be added to variable data with a Page Definition, to an overlay using OGL, to images such as logos and signatures, or as highlight color boxes under black text. Print Services Facility (PSF) or Infoprint(R) Manager sends the color information to the printer in the IPDS(TM) (Intelligent Printer Data Stream) printer command stream. The AFCCU(TM) generates separate bitmaps for black and color printing. The black bitmap is passed to Printer 1 for printing, while the color bitmap is printed in Printer 2.
