Application considerations

Rendering of the colors is inherently device and resolution independent. The command to cover an area with highlight color in some percent coverage is not resolved into a bitmap until it is being processed in the printer.

Page synchronization

When there is an error during printing on an AFP(TM) printer, for example a paper jam or unexpected communications failure, the PSF print software will recover the job and continue to print at the last page in process when the error occurred. When printing on printers with long paper paths, such as the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 duplex printers, and printers with attached post-processors, this process is quite complex. PSF must take into account not only the pages in the printer, but also the pages in any attached post-processing equipment. In rare instances, it is possible for side 1 and side 2 of a document to get out of synchronization. Because of the long paper path through the Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100, this same possibility exists for a highlight color application. The following are some suggestions for techniques that can be considered to insure page synchronization.

Duplex Side 1/2 Verification

The Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 duplex printing system can verify the proper alignment and synchronization of side 1 and side 2 of a document when printing on these systems. A requirement is that the black toner must be in engine 1 and the color toner must be in engine 2.

When printing simplex jobs, Side 1/1 Verification is not supported.
Program-controlled synchronization verification

For an application that is printing numbers in color, for example the amount now due, while the main part of the page is standard text printed in black, it would be desirable for the operator to have some means to verify that the correct color data is, in fact, being printed on a page after a recovery action. One technique for doing this is to duplicate printing of the color data in black in very small type at the edge or bottom of a page. This data redundancy technique gives the operator something to compare to insure synchronization. This technique has been used effectively in printing systems in which the variable data is system generated, while page formatting instructions for each page are stored independently in the printer and coordinated by the printer on a page by page basis.
