Taking care of problems >
Running traces
The Traces panel lets you save channel and microcode events (traces) as
an aid in resolving problems. Some traces are always active. Other optional
traces are only active when you enable additional tracing. The additional
tracing remains active until you stop it.
Notes:
- Traces affects both printers when you are printing in duplex mode. In
dual simplex mode, all trace actions apply only to that printer.
- Enabling additional traces may affect performance.
- Procedures that save trace data to diskettes, may require two
diskettes to save all the trace data.
- The backup diskette should be left in the diskette drive at all times,
except when a trace is being saved.
To save traces to diskette:
- Select Maintenance -> Traces on the touchscreen window.
- Insert a formatted 3.5-inch diskette in the diskette drive. If you do
not have a formatted diskette, place an unformatted diskette in the diskette
drive and select Format Diskette.
- Select Save Traces after the error occurs.
- Select Diskette on the next panel that displays.
This will save the trace information on a diskette after the trace is completed.
- Select OK.
To e-mail traces:
Notes:
- Either TCP/IP ethernet or TCP/IP token ring must be installed and enabled
before you can use e-mail trace. See the Infoprint 4000/4100
Planning and Configuration Guide for information about configuring these
attachments.
- Before you can e-mail your saved trace data, the printer must be correctly
configured to send e-mails. See Configuring e-mail traces for instructions.
- Select Maintenance -> Traces on the touchscreen window.
- Select Save Traces after the error occurs.
- Select E-mail on the next panel that displays. This
will save the trace information and display a panel showing the e-mail destination
information.
- Enter a detailed description of the problem in the Description field. The non-blank fields on the panel are:
- The To field contains the internet address of the
default mail destination (ibmpsm@us.ibm.com). This field can be edited.
- The From field contains the customer name that is
specified on the E-mail tab (see Configuring e-mail traces).
This field can be edited.
- The Subject field contains the machine serial number
and time stamp. This field is read only.
Note:
Sending the trace to the specified mail destination does
not initiate a service call.
- Select OK to send the e-mail trace.
To archive traces on the hard drive:
- Select Maintenance -> Traces on the touchscreen window.
- Select Save Traces after the error occurs.
- Select Archive on the next panel that displays.
This saves the trace information to an archive file system on the hard drive
for use by your service representative.
- Select OK.
To save additional tracing:
- Select Maintenance -> Traces on the touchscreen window.
- Select Yes for Additional
Tracing Enabled.
- Select OK.
- Once the error occurs again, select Maintenance ->
Traces.
- Insert a formatted 3.5-inch diskette in the diskette drive. If you do
not have a formatted diskette, place an unformatted diskette in the diskette
drive and select Format Diskette.
- Save Traces. This will save the trace
information on a diskette and stop the additional tracing.
- Select Diskette on the next panel that displays.
This will save the trace information on a diskette after the trace is completed.
- Select OK.
